Considering converting collection to mp4 and putting on Hard drive, any thoughts?

I have about 1,000 movies on dvd and blueray. I have burned my whole Cd collection and have it on file, almost 3TB. Looking to do this to my movie collection and keeping on 8TB HD. Quite the Slog. Any thoughts, I do this with JRiver for audio, this website is great for organization does not look to tie into playback, but I want software not requiring internet connection and works as sever as well. Any thought, such a thing?
